Learning to Read – Many early reading books use pictures to replace new or difficult words. If your child can recognise a red apple, they will be able to read a sentence with a picture of a red apple in it. Recognizing certain objects by their color as well as their shape helps your child learn how to read.
Providing enough spaces between the lines is also another key. Another tip is to always simplify the instructions. Complex vocabulary can be very misleading and often times, they do add stress to the student. You can keep the worksheet very challenging without making it boring. Be extra sensitive as to whom you are distributing these worksheets. Do not assume that Asian learners, in particular, appreciate the English alphabet. Other learners such as the Chinese, Indians, Japanese and Koreans do have high regards to their traditional letters and this should be considered at all times. Note that spelling skills in this case, is simply a challenge for them. Young Asian learners are often taught with their Mother Language first and so preparing worksheets in English require extra effort in the structure as well as in the presentation.
It is important to learn letter first. The children must need to know how to write letters in printable form. After that, they can be taught how to write cursive. Writing cursives is not as easy as writing letters in printable form.
There are several ways of writing worksheets. Cursive writing worksheets and specialized kindergarten group worksheets are very common amongst the small children. The children get expertise by practicing over with these worksheets and learn the control of hand muscles for writing and follow the pattern of writing, which is helpful for them for their whole life. There are various patterns of the different letter strokes present in these worksheets. The tracing of these patters make the kids to slowly learn the structuring of letter.
At a young age, kids are first taught to write letters in print only. When kids reach the age of eight to ten, they are taught how to write in cursive. They may find this quite difficult and boring at first. But one fun way to teach them this is to use worksheets also. The basic cursive worksheets that you can use are Rockin’ Round Letters, Climb’n’ Slide Letters, Loopy Letters, Lumpy Letters, and Mix ’n’ Match.
The first step is to consider the correct or appropriate font to use – the bigger the better. Avoid fonts such as the Roman Script as the curls and curves of the letters may be confusing. For kids, fun fonts such as the Comic Sans MS are advisable. It can be used as standard fonts for worksheets especially when bugger fonts are needed. Note that the font size itself may differ depending on the age of the students. So when writing worksheets for kids, font sizes between 14 and 18 are suggested.
